Description

This object, also known as PK 173-5.1, is a planetary nebula located 3500 light years away in the constellation of Auriga at a declination of +31 degrees. This nebula spans 3 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 3 light years.

This PN is one of many planetary nebulae that were named after their discoverer, Czech astronomer Dr. Luboš Kohoutek.

It is interesting that SIMBAD lists this object as a reflection nebula (LBN 809). Its entry in SIMBAD even includes a note - "This is not a PN". Well, I have imaged lots of both objects, and this is clearly a PN. There is even a dim 18th magnitude blue progenitor star at the center. Little Ha was present in this object and lots of OIII, so I didn't even bother getting Ha subs. This object reminds me of Abell 31, without the outer Ha rim.
